It is Saturday morning, us parents are still in bed, trying hard to stay asleep/go back to sleep. The kids are wide awake and are playing in their room, yelling at each other to keep quiet to let us sleep.
They play in English, of course, and seem to have a lot of fun as they rotate through their favourite games, none of which make sense to the un-initiated and all of which have names like Dum-be-dum and such.
Until all of a sudden young Punk 2 starts singing and Punk 1 chimes in:
Laterne, Laterne
Sonne, Mond und Sterne.
Brenne auf mein Licht, brenne auf mein Licht,
aber nur meine liebe Laterne nicht.
Followed by:
Rabimmel rabammel rabumm-bumm-bumm.
After a few renditions of the above, all utterly out of season of course, they go back to playing. In English. Like nothing had happened.

We think they think like 2, 3, and 4 year olds but do we REALLY know how a 2, 3, and 4 year old thinks? :D
We have the exact same thing, sudden outburst of German songs, in the middle of speaking English. Bizarre.
Or sudden odd German words which she picked up in a German DVD. They just don't often let on how good their German actually is, do they!
