Our latest connundrum....
S, very fond these days of wearing her wristwatch, even though she can't yet tell time, is trying to take it off the other day. Now this usually causes a few minor problems and requires some parental intervention, what with her still trying to figure out how to do things one-handed - but she does it by herself for the first time and proudly announces,
"Mama guck! Ich habe meine Ohr alleine abgemacht!!!!"
[Mama look! I took my ear off all by myself!!!!]
As usual, I ignore the grammatical problems, but I'm trying to keep a straight face and ask her,
"Du hast Dein Ohr abgemacht????? Warum das denn?"
[You took off your ear????? Why did you do that?]
After she's done giggling, she gives me a very perplexed look and a strong, "Nicht meine Ohr! Meine Ohr! Ich habe meine Ohr alleine abgemacht! Guck mal!", waving her watch at my face enthusiastically.
[Not my ear! My ear! I took my ear off by myself! Look!]
I give in by asking, "Oh, Du meinst Uhr? Du hast Deine Uhr alleine abgemacht?"
"Ja, meine Ohr! Ich habe gesagt ich habe meine Ohr abgemacht!!!!"
[Yes, my ear! I said I took my ear off!!!!]
As it turns out, she can hear the distinction between the O in Ohr (ear) and the U in Uhr (watch), but she can't actually say it clearly. Now she's practising this and has begun to joke about it by asking me to take my ears off or telling O to do so with his.
But she knows. And I know that one day soon she'll be able to say it right. Wouldn't be the first time, after all, that something has caused her a bit of a problem, only to be conquered eventually.
