Teach Your Kids How To Write In German

If you're overly ambitious like me and want your budding bilingual child(ren) to be 'fully' bilingual, i.e., be able to read and write in another language and not just understand and speak this other language, and this other language happens to be German, then here's something worth checking out.

Das Schreiblernbuch and its continuation Das Schreiblernbuch für Fortgeschrittene - a ton of work sheets and exercises you can use to torture help your child(ren) to not only speak German, but to actually learn how to write it, too. And it's all free.

Here's how they explain it:

"Dieser Schreibkurs wurde speziell für deutschsprachige Familien geschaffen, die im Ausland leben und darauf angewiesen sind, ihren Kindern das deutsche Lesen und Schreiben im Hausunterricht zu vermitteln. Geeignet ist er für Kinder im Alter von fünf bis zwölf Jahren, die flüssig deutsch sprechen, etwas deutsch lesen können und in einer anderen Sprache mit lateinischer Schrift (z. B. Englisch oder Französisch) bereits grundlegende Schreibkenntnisse haben."

My kids are a bit too young for this still, though Punk 1, of course, is learning how to write the letters of the alphabet in JK these days. Once she's progressed out of that and is on to words, we might give it a try. Some of the easier work sheets she'd already be able to do with a little bit more help from me, so maybe we'll have a look at some of these once the usual pre-Christmas chaos has subsided.
